Rest and Healing

Resting (modified from PHB 186)

Short Rest
A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.

A character can spend one or two Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, taken from a pool of the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character’s level.  For every Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die and adds the character’s Constitution modifier to it.  The character regains hit points equal to the total.  The player can decide to spend a second Hit Die after the first is rolled.  A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon a long rest, as explained below.

If the character or a party member either has the Healer feat, carries a Healer’s Kit with uses left, or has Potions of Healing, then more than two Hit Dice can be spent to heal, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice.  If using a Healer’s Kit, then one use of the kit is expended for each character that uses this enhanced healing.

Likewise, if using Potions of Healing, one potion is expended for each character.  Alternatively, the potion can just be consumed for the healing that it would provide normally; in some cases, this may be more beneficial.

Long Rest
A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least 8 hours long, during which a character sleeps or performs light activity; reading, talking, eating, or standing watch for no more than 2 hours.  If the rest is interrupted by a period of strenuous activity – at least 1 hour of walking, fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity – the characters must begin the rest again to gain any benefit from it.

At the end of a long rest, a character heals to half of their hp total.  If they are already at half their hp total, or would rather, they can spend one or two Hit Dice at the end of their long rest, just as the short rest above.

If the character or a party member either has the Healer feat, carries a Healer’s Kit with uses left, or has Potions of Healing, then they heal to half of their hp total.  As above, if they are already at half their hp total, or would rather, they can spend more than two Hit Dice can be spent to heal, up to the character’s maximum number of Hit Dice.

At the end of a long rest, a character will regain spent Hit Dice.  They will regain 1 spent HD to their pool if taking a long rest only, and will regain up to a number of dice equal to half of their total HD pool if aided by a Healer, a healer’s kit, or a potion of healing.

A character can’t benefit from more than one long rest in a 24-hour period, and a character must have at least 1 hit point at the start of the rest to gain its benefits.
